Fast Bites (back at it)

Happy Monday, IBPSA Members!

We are back in the office and back at it! THANK YOU to everyone who attended our conference last week – our biggest one yet. We’ll be sharing photos and key insights from it in the coming days, so stay tuned. In the meantime, whether you attended or not, please take a moment to watch the Facebook Live post IBPSA Member Stephanie Shipley, CPACP, of Paw and Order in New Brunswick did for her clients on her facility’s Facebook page. During the conference, Stephanie posted photos and detailed all of the sessions she was attending and the vendors she was meeting with so they could see how much she values education and the quality of services provided at Paw and Order. She also took them on a Facebook Live tour of the trade show. She visited with friends and vendors and gave lots of shout outs. It was fabulous, eh. We should all channel our inner Stephanie. Watch her in action here.

Speaking of showing your clients – and potential clients, and community, and competitors – how much you value education...last week the Wall Street Journal published “Want a Job as a Dog Walker? It’s Just Like Getting into Harvard“, an article on how the on-demand pet services apps like and Wag have stringent testing and requirements for their pet care providers. How are you letting your clients, potential clients, community, and competitors know about your pet care education? Have you received IBPSA species certifications? PACCC certifications? Have you posted who is certified on your website? Are you using those credentials in email signatures? Are the certificates hanging on the wall of your facility? As I discussed in my State of the Industry address at the conference, the landscape has changed for pet care providers. This is just one example of how.

Did you know this week is Fire Prevention Week? The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has made this year’s theme “Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!” Do you have a fire escape plan for your facility? Fire prevention protocols? Here are some quick tips:

  • Keep only enough combustibles that you need, store rest in a safe area
  • Store quick burning materials in designated locations away from ignition sources
  • Change clothes if they become contaminated with flammable liquids
  • Keep passageways and fire doors free from obstructions
  • Stairwell doors should be kept closed and never store items in a stairwell
  • Keep materials at least 18″ from automatic sprinklers and fire extinguishers
  • Clearance of 3 feet is required between materials and the ceiling
  • Don’t overload circuits, and turn off machines at the end of the day
  • Make sure your “Fire Prevention Plan” is in writing and available for employees to review

Fire Prevention Week Special! To honor the week, our Fire Safety Program will be just $60 until October 14th (regularly $75). Does your staff know what to do in case of a fire? Do they know the different types of fires and how each should be extinguished without causing an even bigger fire? Make sure they have the proper training with this informative fire safety PowerPoint presentation. Available only to IBPSA Members through the online store here.

If you weren’t able to attend our pre-conference Pricing For Profit (P4P) workshop, we have good news! Our acclaimed financial course will be back in February along with a Productivity Workshop presented by Susan Briggs. You can take either or both! We received this note after the first day of last week’s P4P: “I just wanted to pass along my appreciation for today’s Pricing For Profit session. Today alone was worth my trip to Florida.  As a new owner, this information is vital and terribly helpful. THANK YOU.” It’s good stuff! Our next P4P is February 11-12 and the Productivity Workshop is February 13, 2018. And it all happens at the Renaissance St Louis Airport Hotel in St. Louis, Missouri. Get the details at

Our conference attendees received a print version of the Q4 Pet Care Pro Quarterly but the digital version will be available for all this week. We’ll let you know as soon as it’s posted!

Good luck to all of our IBPSA Members taking the upcoming PACCC exams starting THIS Saturday. IBPSA Members comprise the greatest percentage of PACCC certified professionals because you already value education and best practices. You got this!
