Most dog owners regard their canine companions as beloved members of the family—so when choosing pet care service providers, they tend to seek out those with a strong reputation and a demonstrated commitment to providing the highest level of care. Regardless of your specific niche in the competitive and rapidly growing pet care industry, obtaining professional certifications is a powerful way to signify your expertise and dedication to excellence while providing peace of mind for your customers.

Canine Certification Opportunities

At IBPSA, we are pleased to offer several canine-focused training and certification programs to help boarding facilities, pet sitters, dog trainers, groomers, and other pet care professionals elevate their skills and knowledge. Options include:

  • Canine species-specific certifications. Developed by veterinarians and industry experts, we offer species-specific certifications for dogs and other animals, such as cats, birds, and ferrets. These certifications are conveniently available through the IBPSA Online Education Center and are designed to help pet care professionals understand basic concepts and best practices regarding canine care. Each curriculum includes quizzes for each chapter to help students prepare for the final exam; after passing the exam online, you’ll receive a certificate by mail that can be displayed at your facility.
  • Heroes for Healthy Pets® Infectious Disease Management Certification Program. If you operate a boarding facility or any other facility where pets may come into contact with each other, ensuring a healthy and sanitary environment is crucial for preventing infectious disease transmission. IBPSA is proud to serve as the certifying authority for the Heroes for Healthy Pets program, which covers the latest best practices when it comes to pet health, sanitation, and preventing the spread of common infectious diseases. The program is particularly focused on diseases that afflict dogs, including the canine infectious respiratory disease complex (CIRDC), Leptospirosis, Parvo, and Distemper. Heroes for Healthy Pets is FREE for IBPSA Members and non-members alike—just register online at https://www.ibpsa.com/infectious-disease/ and begin the process of obtaining your certification!
  • Risk Management & Safety Facility Certification. Developed to help pet care businesses adhere to best practices for risk management and safety, reduce losses, provide a certifiably safe environment for staff and pets, and inspire confidence in customers that their pets are in one of the safest places possible, this certification program is unique in the industry for its focus on creating an environment that protects both pets and people. The Risk Management & Safety Facility Certification is only available to IBPSA Members, and is managed by IBPSA’s Certification Committee in coordination with a seasoned, professional risk management and safety consultant who works with participating facilities.
  • Certifications through the Professional Animal Care Certification Council (PACCC). As a 501(c)(6) nonprofit organization, PACCC introduced objective, independent testing and certification to the pet care industry. The organization offers three levels of certification, depending on the recipient’s industry experience and degree of responsibility: Certified Professional Animal Care Provider (CPACP), which is designed for those in charge of the daily handling of animals at a professional pet care business; Certified Professional Animal Care Manager (CPACM), for those who handle the day-to-day operation of a professional pet care business; and Certified Professional Animal Care Operator (CPACO), intended for those responsible for the overall operation of a professional pet care business. As a PACCC Gold Sponsor, IBPSA offers our Members a wealth of educational resources and preparation materials needed to successfully pass the intensive PACCC exams—in fact, our species-specific and Heroes for Healthy Pets programs are recommended by PACCC to prepare for the exams.

In addition to these certifications, we offer a wide variety of other training and educational opportunities for pet care professionals and their teams through our Online Education Center.
